Teaching ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) in Manchester was one of the most enriching experiences of my career. Moving from Mumbai to the UK in early 2022, I transitioned from teaching IELTS in India to working as an ESOL tutor in Manchester. This blog delves into my journey, how I helped adult learners improve their English, and how new learners arriving in the UK can benefit from ESOL courses.

Understanding ESOL: What Is It?

ESOL meaning refers to English language learning programs designed for people whose first language is not English. These courses are essential for improving language proficiency, integrating into English-speaking societies, and enhancing employability.

Why ESOL Matters:

  • It equips learners with the ability to communicate effectively in daily life.
  • It provides certification for different ESOL levels, such as ESOL Entry 3 and ESOL Level 1, recognized by employers and educational institutions.
  • ESOL classes often help learners meet ESOL visa requirements for residency or work permits in the UK.

My Teaching Experience: Helping Learners Thrive

From February 2022 to February 2024, I taught ESOL courses to adult learners in Manchester. Initially, I conducted day classes, but later, I began evening sessions to accommodate more learners. Teaching in Manchester gave me a unique opportunity to connect with people from various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. This exposure helped me grow as an educator and allowed me to appreciate the diversity of the world in ways no book or online resource ever could.

Organizing Walking Tours: A Cultural Exchange

One of the initiatives I took as an ESOL tutor was organizing walking tours around Manchester. These tours not only helped learners practice their English in real-life situations but also introduced them to the city’s rich history and culture. We explored landmarks such as:

  • Deansgate
  • MediaCityUK
  • Local museums

For me, these tours were a chance to experience Manchester’s charm as a newcomer, while for my students, they provided a practical way to integrate into their new environment.

Helping Learners Improve Their English

Teaching ESOL was more than just delivering lessons. I took a personal interest in helping my students succeed by:

  1. Customizing Lessons: Tailoring lessons to focus on conversational skills, grammar, and vocabulary based on learners' individual needs.
  2. Building Confidence: Encouraging learners to participate in discussions, presentations, and practical exercises to boost their speaking skills.
  3. Preparing for Certifications: Guiding learners to achieve certificates for ESOL Entry 3, ESOL Level 1, and higher levels, which are often required for employment or further education.

Many of my students were referred by government-led job centres, and I’m proud to say they left with not just improved language skills but also greater confidence in their abilities.
