1. Introduction

The Global Talent Visa UK is designed for highly skilled individuals in fields like technology, science, engineering, humanities, arts, and culture. It allows you to live and work in the UK without a job offer, as long as you’re endorsed by an approved endorsing body.

Whether you're a leading researcher, digital innovator, filmmaker, or artist, the Global Talent Visa is a prestigious route offering flexibility, faster settlement, and the freedom to work with any employer—or start your own venture.

2. Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for the UK Global Talent Visa if you're a leader or emerging leader in your field. The application is a two-stage process: Stage 1 – Endorsement, and Stage 2 – Visa Application. You must qualify under one of the eligible categories.

Eligibility Route Examples of Professions Endorsing Body
Digital Technology Software engineers, AI experts, product designers Previously Tech Nation (new body TBA)
Science, Engineering, Medicine Researchers, academics, healthcare innovators UKRI (UK Research and Innovation)
Arts & Culture Film directors, musicians, fashion designers Arts Council England
Architecture Innovative architects or urban designers Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
Humanities & Social Sciences Professors, sociologists, economists British Academy

There are two pathways:

  • Exceptional Talent – for established leaders in their field
  • Exceptional Promise – for emerging leaders showing strong potential

The endorsement stage is mandatory unless you’re applying via a fast-track route (e.g. eligible award holders, peer review route).

3. Endorsement Process

The endorsement stage is Step 1 of the Global Talent Visa application. You must be endorsed by a Home Office-approved endorsing body in your field before proceeding to the visa application.

How Endorsement Works

Field Endorsing Body Known For
Digital Technology Tech Nation (closed) → New body expected mid-2025 Entrepreneurs, developers, AI/ML experts
Science & Engineering UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) Academic research, innovation, STEM
Arts & Culture Arts Council England Visual art, film, dance, literature
Architecture RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Innovative and internationally recognized design
Humanities & Social Science British Academy Academics, historians, sociologists

What to Include in Your Endorsement Application

  • CV and personal statement outlining your work and impact
  • Portfolio or proof of published work, press, awards
  • Three letters of recommendation from experts in your field
  • Proof of significant contribution or recognition (publications, speaking, innovation, etc.)

After submitting your online application for endorsement, the relevant body will review and issue a decision—typically within 8 weeks. If approved, you'll receive an endorsement letter to proceed with your visa application (Stage 2).

For applicants in Digital Technology, a new endorsing body will be confirmed soon following Tech Nation’s closure. Until then, consider applying in other eligible categories if applicable.

4. Visa Application Process

Once you’ve secured your endorsement (Stage 1), you can apply for the visa itself (Stage 2). This is done online through the official UK government visa portal.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step Action
1 Receive your endorsement letter from the endorsing body
2 Apply for the Global Talent Visa (Stage 2) via the UKVI website
3 Pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
4 Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC)
5 Submit biometrics (photo and fingerprints)
6 Wait for a decision – most are issued within 3 weeks

You can choose a visa duration of 1 to 5 years. The longer the duration, the higher the Immigration Health Surcharge, but you won’t need to extend later.

If you are already in the UK on a different visa (e.g. Skilled Worker), you may be able to switch to the Global Talent Visa route — provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

5. Visa Fees

The total cost of a Global Talent Visa includes the endorsement stage (if applicable), the visa application fee, and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

Fee Component Cost (GBP) Approx. INR Notes
Endorsement Fee (Stage 1) £456 ₹48,400 Paid to endorsing body before visa application
Visa Application Fee (Stage 2) £167 ₹17,700 Flat rate, regardless of visa duration
IHS (Healthcare Fee) £1,035/year ₹1,10,000/year Multiply by number of years chosen

Note: INR rates are approximate and may vary with exchange rates. You must pay both the endorsement fee and visa fee if applying from outside the UK.

If you are applying based on an eligible award (e.g. a Nobel Prize), you may be exempt from the endorsement stage.

6. Dependants & Family Members

You can bring your close family members with you to the UK under the Global Talent Visa. These individuals will receive dependant visas and can live, work, and study in the UK.

Who Qualifies as a Dependant?

Dependant Type Eligibility
Spouse or Civil Partner You must be legally married or in a registered civil partnership
Unmarried Partner Must have lived together for at least 2 years in a relationship similar to marriage
Children under 18 Can be included as dependants if financially supported and living with you

Visa Benefits for Dependants

  • Spouses/partners can work in any job or start a business
  • Children can attend UK schools and access the NHS
  • Dependants are eligible for ILR (permanent residency) after 5 years

Each dependant must pay the visa fee (£167) and IHS surcharge (£1,035/year)—just like the main applicant. Their visa duration will match yours.

7. Extensions & ILR (Settlement)

The Global Talent Visa offers one of the fastest routes to settlement (ILR) in the UK. Depending on your endorsement type, you could apply for ILR in just 3 years.

ILR Eligibility Timeline

Visa Category ILR Eligibility Requirement
Exceptional Talent After 3 years Active contribution and presence in your field
Exceptional Promise After 5 years Demonstrate continued development and work

Extension Rules

  • You can extend your Global Talent Visa indefinitely as long as you remain active in your endorsed field
  • No sponsorship or job offer required for extensions
  • You must apply before your current visa expires

For ILR, you must also meet the continuous residence requirement, have no serious immigration breaches, and pass the Life in the UK test.

Dependants can also apply for ILR after 5 continuous years if they have lived with you under a dependant visa.
