How IELTS Scoring Works

IELTS uses a 9-band scale โ€” from Band 1 (Non-user) to Band 9 (Expert user) โ€” to report results for each skill and as an overall score. Each band corresponds to a defined level of English competence.

Your overall band score is calculated by averaging your four skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and rounding to the nearest 0.5. For example: if you score L7.5 + R7.0 + W6.5 + S7.0 = 28.0 รท 4 = 7.0 overall.
