UK Student Visa

IELTS for UK Student Visa

Students often ask for one fixed IELTS answer for the UK Student visa, but the rule changes with course level and with whether your university can assess your English itself. Separate degree-level study, below-degree study and pre-sessional routes before you book any test.

Do you need IELTS for a UK Student visa?

Not always. GOV.UK requires English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level. At degree level, your university can assess your English itself, and a degree taught in English (confirmed by Ecctis) can also count. Below degree level, most students need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI. Your university sets the actual IELTS score.

How does the English requirement change by course level?

The Student visa does not use one identical English answer for every applicant. Course level and whether your sponsor can assess English make the biggest difference. Pick your route below.

Important note

At degree level or above, a Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself, but it must still be equivalent to CEFR B2.

What are the accepted ways to prove English for a Student visa?

GOV.UK lists four ways to prove your knowledge of English:

  • A UK school qualification you began before 18: GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, or Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English.
  • A degree-level qualification taught in English and awarded by a UK institution, even if you studied outside the UK.
  • A degree from an institution outside the UK that was taught in English, confirmed by an Ecctis assessment as equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher. This is the option many Indian graduates miss.
  • A pass in a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider, such as IELTS for UKVI.

You do not need to prove English at all if you are a national of one of the majority English-speaking countries on the GOV.UK list, a national of Canada, or you already proved your English in a previous visa application.

Why students get confused about IELTS and UK study routes

Many students mix up the university admission requirement with the visa evidence requirement. A university may accept one form of English proof for admission while the visa side still needs a different kind of evidence or an approved test format.

That is why the safest approach is to check both the university side and the immigration side before booking any exam.

When do you actually need IELTS for UKVI?

At degree level or above, many students are assessed by their sponsor, so a SELT is not always required. Below degree level, and with sponsors that do not assess English themselves, a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI is the usual route. Never assume UKVI or non-UKVI by habit: ask your university which proof it will use for your CAS.

If you are still unsure about the two versions, read UKVI or regular IELTS for a UK visa before you book.

What is the practical difference between B1 and B2 for UK study?

B2 is the visa level for degree-level study and above. B1 is the level below degree level. The key point is that this is a route-level distinction set by GOV.UK, while the actual IELTS band you need comes from your university or course provider, and is often higher than the visa minimum.

What should you check before booking an IELTS test?

  • What English proof the university accepts for the course, and the exact band in your offer
  • Whether a UKVI-approved SELT is specifically required for your CAS
  • Whether a degree taught in English or a UK school qualification already covers the requirement
  • Your intake date and when scores must be ready (SELT results must be no older than 2 years when you apply)

What mistakes do students make most often when booking IELTS for UK study?

Booking IELTS for UKVI without first checking whether the university can assess English itself.

Booking standard IELTS when the visa side actually needs a SELT.

Assuming every UK course needs the same band score.

Not checking whether an English-taught degree (with an Ecctis assessment) already proves English.

Confusing short-term English study with the sponsored Student visa route.

What should you do next?

Frequently Asked Questions

GOV.UK sets CEFR B2 for study at degree level or above and CEFR B1 for study below degree level. The IELTS score itself is set by your university or course provider, so check the exact band in your offer letter.

No. At degree level or above, your Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself, as long as the level is equivalent to B2. A degree taught in English (confirmed by Ecctis) or a UK school qualification can also count. Below degree level, most applicants prove English with a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS for UKVI.

It can, if the degree was taught in English and Ecctis confirms it is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher. You apply to Ecctis for an assessment and use the code it gives you in your visa application.

B2 is the visa level for degree-level study and above. B1 is the level for study below degree level. This is a route difference set by GOV.UK, not just a difficulty label.

Choose based on your sponsor and course level. If a SELT is required, book IELTS for UKVI, because standard IELTS Academic is not on the SELT list. If your university assesses your English itself at degree level and accepts standard IELTS Academic for admission, that may be enough. Confirm with the university before you book.

Nationals of the majority English-speaking countries listed on GOV.UK (such as Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Ireland), people who completed a degree-level qualification in one of those countries, nationals of Canada, and people who already proved their English in a previous visa application.

Assuming every UK study route needs the same test. Many students book IELTS for UKVI without checking whether the university can assess English itself, or book standard IELTS when the route actually needs a SELT.
