What Is IELTS Academic, and Is It the Right Test for You?
IELTS Academic is the version of the IELTS test required by universities worldwide for undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional qualification programmes. If you are applying to study in the UK, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, your university offer letter will almost always specify “IELTS Academic”, not IELTS General Training.
The four skills, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, are all tested. Listening and Speaking are identical to IELTS General Training. The key differences are in Reading (harder, academic-level passages) and Writing (Task 1 is a graph, chart, or diagram rather than a letter).
Quick rule of thumb:
- University admission anywhere? → IELTS Academic
- UK, Canada, or Australia work visa or PR? → IELTS General Training online course
- UK spouse or skilled worker visa? → IELTS course for a UK visa
- Canada Express Entry? → IELTS course for Canada PR

What Does the IELTS Academic Course Cover?

Academic Writing Task 1: Graphs & Diagrams
Bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, tables, maps, and process diagrams. You learn the exact band-scoring language and structure, then submit real answers for marked feedback against official IELTS descriptors.
Academic Writing Task 2: Argument Essays
Opinion, discussion, problem-solution, and two-part questions. Sahil teaches a clear, examiner-tested structure and gives line-by-line feedback on your actual essays, explaining exactly why they are Band 6 rather than Band 7.
IELTS Academic Reading
Academic Reading uses dense university-level passages. Sahil teaches skimming, scanning, and inference strategies for every question type, matching headings, True/False/Not Given, sentence completion, and multiple choice.
IELTS Listening
All four listening sections, from conversations to academic lectures. You practise note-taking, prediction, and accuracy strategies. Section 4 (academic lecture) is the hardest and receives the most focused attention.
IELTS Speaking All Three Parts
Weekly speaking mock tests covering Part 1 (personal topics), Part 2 (long turn), and Part 3 (abstract discussion). Feedback covers all four examiner criteria: fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

How Does Sahil Teach IELTS Academic?
The most common way students prepare for IELTS Academic is by doing practice tests and then checking the answers. That works to a point, but it rarely moves you from Band 6 to Band 7. What actually moves scores is understanding why a piece of writing is Band 6 and not Band 7, and then fixing that specific thing.
Sahil marks your actual writing, both Task 1 and Task 2, using the four official IELTS Writing Band Descriptors: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. He explains which of these is limiting your score and shows you exactly what to change.
