IELTS Score for Canada 2026: PR, Express Entry, Study and Work Requirements
The IELTS score for Canada PR depends on the program. Express Entry only accepts IELTS General Training, and the Federal Skilled Worker program needs at least CLB 7, which is 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Results must be less than 2 years old, and Canada does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

What IELTS score do you need for Canada PR?
For Canada PR through Express Entry, the minimum depends on your program: CLB 7 for Federal Skilled Worker (IELTS General Training 6.0 in each skill), CLB 7 or CLB 5 for the Canadian Experience Class depending on your occupation's TEER level, and CLB 5 for speaking and listening plus CLB 4 for reading and writing in the Federal Skilled Trades program.

The minimum only makes you eligible. Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which decides whether you get an invitation, rises with higher CLB levels, so most competitive candidates aim for CLB 9 or higher.
IELTS to CLB conversion table
IRCC converts each IELTS General Training skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark separately. CLB 7 is 6.0 in all four skills. CLB 9 needs 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking. CLB 10 needs 8.5 Listening, 8.0 Reading, and 7.5 in Writing and Speaking.

Listening is the hardest skill to convert
CLB 9 needs 8.0 in Listening, a full band higher than in the other skills. Most candidates aiming for CLB 9 need to target Listening specifically.

IELTS Academic or General for Canada PR?
General Training. IRCC accepts only the IELTS General Training option for Express Entry; IELTS Academic results are not accepted for PR through Express Entry. IELTS Academic is used for study in Canada, because colleges and universities set their own admission requirements.

Is IELTS required for Canada?
For Express Entry PR you must take an approved language test, and IELTS General Training is one of three accepted English tests alongside CELPIP-General and PTE Core. For study permits, the language requirement is set by your school. Many work permits do not need a language test, but some programs and employers ask for one.

How long is IELTS valid for Canada?
IRCC requires your language test results to be less than 2 years old both when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. If your results expire between those points, your application can be refused, so plan your test date around the draw timeline.
Can you use IELTS One Skill Retake for Canada?
No. IRCC states that it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. If one skill falls short, you need to retake the full IELTS General Training test.

In India, IELTS is run by IDP. IELTS General Training costs ₹19,000 on paper or computer. Book the General Training version, not Academic, for Express Entry. How does IELTS affect your Express Entry score?
IELTS matters twice in Express Entry. First, your CLB level decides whether you are eligible for a program at all. Second, it adds points to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and the points rise steeply above CLB 7. Language is often the fastest factor to improve, because age, education and work history are fixed.
- Eligibility: CLB 7 in all four skills for the Federal Skilled Worker program.
- Ranking: each step up from CLB 7 to CLB 9 or 10 adds CRS points, and higher language also boosts the points from some skill-transferability combinations.
- Partner's language: if you apply with a spouse or partner, their language results can also add points.
IELTS vs CELPIP vs PTE Core for Canada
IRCC accepts three English tests for Express Entry: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. All are converted to the same CLB levels, so none gives an advantage on its own. Choose by format: IELTS has a face-to-face speaking test, while CELPIP and PTE Core are computer-based. Take the one you consistently score highest in.

IELTS for a Canada study permit or work permit
For a study permit, IRCC does not set one IELTS score; your college or university sets its own English requirement for admission, and many accept IELTS Academic. For work permits, many programs do not require a language test, but some employers and specific programs do. Always check your offer letter or the program page before you book.
If you plan to study first and apply for PR later, remember that the two need different test versions: Academic for most universities, General Training for Express Entry.

- Stopping at CLB 7. It makes you eligible, but most candidates need higher CLB levels for a competitive CRS score.
- Ignoring Listening. CLB 9 needs 8.0 in Listening, a higher band than the other three skills.
How long does it take to reach CLB 9?
It depends on your starting point. A candidate already scoring around 6.5 in each skill often needs 4 to 8 weeks of focused practice to reach CLB 9, with most of the work on Listening accuracy and Writing structure. Starting from below CLB 7 usually takes longer. A timed General Training mock test is the best way to estimate your own timeline.
