IELTS Academic vs General Training: The Difference and Which One to Take
The difference in IELTS Academic vs General Training is in Reading and Writing only: Listening and Speaking are identical. Academic uses university-style texts and asks you to describe a chart or diagram; General Training uses everyday texts and a letter. What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
IELTS Academic and General Training share the same Listening and Speaking tests. The Reading and Writing tests differ: Academic Reading uses longer texts from books, journals and newspapers, and Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual information. General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace texts, and its Writing Task 1 is a letter. Task 2 is an essay in both.
| Section | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Listening (about 30 minutes) | Same | Same |
| Reading (60 minutes, 40 questions) | Long academic texts from books, journals and newspapers | Notices, adverts, workplace documents and a longer general text |
| Writing Task 1 | Describe a graph, table, chart, map, process or diagram | Write a letter (formal, semi-formal or informal) |
| Writing Task 2 | Academic-style essay | Essay on a general topic |
| Speaking (11 to 14 minutes) | Same | Same |
Should you take IELTS Academic or General Training?
Choose by what the result is for. Take IELTS Academic for undergraduate or postgraduate study and for professional registration, such as nursing with the NMC. Take IELTS General Training for migration programmes like Canada's Express Entry, and for work or training below degree level. If the result is for a UK visa, you also need the IELTS for UKVI version.
| Goal | Test to book |
|---|---|
| University in the UK, Canada, Australia or elsewhere | IELTS Academic |
| Nursing, medical or other professional registration | IELTS Academic (check your regulator) |
| Canada PR through Express Entry | IELTS General Training (Academic not accepted) |
| Australia skilled migration | Either is accepted for most subclasses; check yours |
| UK work visa (e.g. Skilled Worker) | IELTS for UKVI, Academic or General Training |
| UK spouse visa, ILR or citizenship | IELTS Life Skills A1, A2 or B1 |

Question 1 of 2
What is your main reason for taking IELTS?
Is IELTS Academic or General Training easier?
Many candidates find General Training Reading texts easier to understand, but the scoring is stricter: ielts.org shows that band 6 needs about 30 correct answers out of 40 in General Training Reading, compared with about 23 in Academic Reading. So neither is simply easier. Take the version your goal requires, not the one you think is easier.
| Band | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | about 15/40 | about 23/40 |
| 6 | about 23/40 | about 30/40 |
| 7 | about 30/40 | about 35/40 |
Writing Task 1 is the other big difference. Many learners find describing a chart harder than writing a letter, but a letter has its own traps: tone, purpose and covering all three bullet points.
Are Academic and General Training scored the same way?
Both use the same 0 to 9 band scale, and the overall band is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band. Listening, Speaking and Writing are marked the same way in both. Only Reading uses a different raw-score conversion, because the texts differ in difficulty.
IELTS Academic vs General vs IELTS for UKVI
IELTS for UKVI is not a third format. It is the same Academic or General Training test, taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI centre with extra security so the result can be used for a UK visa. So for a UK Skilled Worker visa you book IELTS for UKVI Academic or IELTS for UKVI General Training.
Read the full IELTS for UKVI guide and the IELTS requirements for UK visas for the scores each route needs.
Academic or General for Canada and Australia?
Canada's Express Entry accepts only IELTS General Training, not Academic; see IELTS score for Canada. For Australia, the Department of Home Affairs accepts both versions for most skilled visas, so choose the one you score higher in; see academic or general IELTS for Australia PR.

Book a free consultationHow to prepare for each version
- Academic: practise describing trends and comparisons in Task 1, and build speed with long, dense Reading passages.
- General Training: practise the three letter types and their tone, and aim for high accuracy in Reading because the raw-score bar is higher.
- Both: Listening and Speaking practice is identical, and Task 2 essay structure is the same.
Academic vs General Writing Task 1: examples
In Academic Writing Task 1 you summarise visual information in at least 150 words, such as a line graph of energy use or a diagram of a process. In General Training Task 1 you write a letter of at least 150 words responding to a situation, such as complaining to a landlord or thanking a colleague. Task 2 is a 250-word essay in both.
| Version | Example task |
|---|---|
| Academic | The chart shows the percentage of households with internet access in three countries between 2000 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features. |
| General Training | You recently bought a kitchen appliance that stopped working. Write a letter to the shop. Explain what you bought, describe the problem and say what you would like the shop to do. |
Academic vs General Reading: what the texts look like
Academic Reading has three long passages taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers, written for a non-specialist audience. General Training Reading starts with short everyday texts such as notices and adverts, moves to workplace texts like job descriptions and training material, and ends with one longer text on a general topic. Both have 40 questions in 60 minutes.
Can you take both versions?
Yes. They are separate tests with separate fees and results, so you can book whichever version each purpose needs, for example Academic for a university application and General Training later for Canada PR. If a single result must serve two purposes, check that both organisations accept that version before you book.
Academic or General for nurses and doctors?
Academic. The NMC, which registers nurses and midwives in the UK, accepts only IELTS Academic, and requires 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing, with results valid for two years. Health professionals should always book the Academic version unless their regulator says otherwise.
The NMC also accepts OET. Compare the two in our guide to IELTS vs OET for nurses.
