Which IELTS do you need for a UK visa?

For a UK visa you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the Home Office. From IELTS that means IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training) for work and study routes, or IELTS Life Skills A1, A2 or B1 for family, settlement and citizenship. Standard IELTS Academic or General Training taken outside a UKVI centre is not accepted as a SELT.

The content of IELTS for UKVI is the same as standard IELTS. The difference is that it is taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI test centre with the extra security the Home Office requires, and your result carries a UKVI reference number that caseworkers use to check it. Our IELTS for UKVI guide explains the test in detail.

Universities are different

If you are going to university at degree level, your university can assess your English itself and may accept standard IELTS Academic. Check your offer letter: the visa route and the university can have different rules.

IELTS required for each UK visa route

Each UK visa route sets a CEFR level, and the Home Office converts it into IELTS for UKVI scores: B1 is 4.0 in each skill, B2 is 5.5 and C1 is 7.0. Work routes and degree study need B2, study below degree level needs B1, and family routes use A1, A2 or B1 speaking and listening tests.

If you already held a Skilled Worker or Scale-up visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending it, GOV.UK says you do not need to prove your English again.

What is the minimum IELTS score for a UK visa?

The minimum is set per skill, not as an overall band. For B1 routes you need at least 4.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in IELTS for UKVI; for B2 routes, 5.5 in each; and for C1, 7.0 in each. A high overall score does not help if one skill is below the minimum, which is the most common reason a result cannot be used.

IELTS requirement for a UK work visa

New Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual applicants need B2 English since 8 January 2026, which is IELTS for UKVI with at least 5.5 in each skill. You can take either the Academic or the General Training version of IELTS for UKVI; both are on the approved list at B2.

  • Nurses, doctors and other regulated professionals: for the Health and Care Worker visa you do not need to prove English again if you passed an English assessment accepted by your professional body, such as the NMC.
  • Extending an older visa: if you first got the visa before 8 January 2026, B1 still applies and you do not need to prove it again.
  • Academic or General Training: both versions of IELTS for UKVI are accepted at B2 for work visas, so choose the one you score better in.

Do you need IELTS for a UK student visa?

Not always. For study below degree level you need B1, normally shown with IELTS for UKVI at 4.0 in each skill. For degree-level study you need the equivalent of B2, but your university can assess your English itself, so it may accept standard IELTS Academic, another test, or your previous education. Your CAS will state how your English was assessed.

You also do not need to prove your English for a Student visa if you are a national of a majority English-speaking country on the GOV.UK list, have a UK degree, or proved your English in an earlier visa application.

IELTS for UK spouse, family and settlement visas

Family routes test speaking and listening only. For a first spouse visa you need A1, usually IELTS Life Skills A1; for the extension A2; and for indefinite leave to remain and British citizenship B1. Standard IELTS Academic or General Training is not what these routes ask for.

Can you apply for a UK visa without IELTS?

Yes, in several cases. Visitor, Graduate and Global Talent visas do not need an English test. On most other routes you are exempt if you are a national of a majority English-speaking country on the GOV.UK list, have a degree taught in English (an overseas degree needs Ecctis confirmation), or, for family routes, are 65 or over or have a qualifying medical condition. Other approved tests such as PTE or LanguageCert also work.

IELTS is the most widely available approved test, but it is not the only one. Pearson (PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home), LanguageCert, Trinity College London (in the UK) and PSI (outside the UK) are also approved. Our PTE UKVI guide compares the scores.

Can you use an expired IELTS for a UK visa?

Generally no. GOV.UK says SELT results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded, so a result older than that will not usually meet the English requirement. The main exception is a test already accepted in an earlier successful application, which some routes allow you to rely on again. Book a new test if your result is close to 2 years old.

IELTS vs other approved tests for UK visas

IELTS for UKVI is not your only option. At B2, the Home Office also accepts PTE Academic UKVI with 59 in each skill and LanguageCert Academic or General SELT with 60 in each skill. At B1 the equivalents are PTE 43 and LanguageCert 40. Pick the test whose format you score best in, because the visa only checks the level.

IELTS requirement for UK nurses and doctors

For the Health and Care Worker visa, GOV.UK says you do not need to prove your English again if you have already passed an English assessment accepted by your professional regulator, such as the NMC for nurses and midwives. In that case the regulator's requirement, not the visa's B2 rule, is the one to plan for. See IELTS vs OET for nurses.
