The calculator is free. Crash Course £154 for two weeks. Full Course £249 for four weeks. One-to-one coaching is £79 per 60-minute session. Group classes are capped at 8 students. Reading uses a separate raw-score table for Academic and for General Training. Listening uses one table.

A calculated score is only useful once you know what to do with it. These are the three questions students ask me right after they see their result.

Get expert feedback →IELTS uses a 9-band scale, from Band 1 (Non-user) to Band 9 (Expert user), to report each skill and your overall result. The scale and its descriptions come from the official IELTS band descriptors, and every centre worldwide, IDP and the British Council included, scores against the same nine bands.
Getting from four separate skill results to one overall band takes four steps. First, find your raw Listening and Reading scores out of 40. Second, convert each one to a band using the tables further down this page: Listening has one table, but Reading has a separate table for Academic and General Training, because the same raw score does not mean the same band on both versions. Third, take your Writing and Speaking bands from an examiner, since those two skills are marked on criteria rather than counted, so there is no raw-to-band table for them, only our free Writing Checker if you want an estimate before your real result arrives. Fourth, average all four bands and round to the nearest 0.5.
I see the same mistake most often on the rounding step. A student of mine once assumed 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 = 26, divided by 4 is 6.5, would round up to 7.0. It does not. The British Council's published rounding rule only rounds .75 up and .25 down, so 6.5 stays 6.5. If rounding like this is confusing your own maths, our rounding rules guide walks through every edge case.

Once you know your four numbers, focus on the lowest one first. It carries the same weight as the other three in the average, so a Band 5.5 Writing pulling down three Band 7 skills costs you more overall than a small gain anywhere else would earn back. Moving a single skill up half a band typically takes 3 to 4 weeks of targeted practice, not general study, if you are already close.
Writing and Speaking respond best to feedback from someone who scores like an examiner, since you cannot self-mark those two skills reliably. For Listening and Reading, a full timed mock test under real conditions shows you whether the gap is timing, vocabulary, or a specific question type, which matters more than raw hours spent.

Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest 0.5. Example: 7.5 + 6.5 + 7.0 + 7.0 = 28, divided by 4 is 7.0 overall. A student of mine, Priya, scored 6.5 in three skills and 7.5 in Reading last month; her average came to 6.75, which the official rule rounds up to 7.0.
Listening has 40 questions. Your raw score (the number you get right) converts to a band through the official table above, not a direct percentage. 30 to 31 correct gives Band 7; you need 37 or 38 correct for Band 8.5.
Reading also has 40 questions, but Academic and General Training use different conversion tables. The same 30 correct answers gives roughly Band 6.5 on Academic but Band 6 on General Training, so always check which table applies to your test.
The nine-band scale and the rounding rule are identical for both. What differs is the Reading conversion table (General Training is more forgiving for the same raw score) and the Writing and Speaking task content, not the scoring method itself.
Canada's Express Entry system converts each IELTS band to a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) level first, then that CLB feeds into your CRS points. Band 7.0 in each skill is roughly CLB 9. Use our CLB and CRS calculators below for the exact figures.
It depends on your purpose. The UK Skilled Worker visa needs B1, around IELTS 4.0 in each skill. Most UK universities ask for 6.0 to 7.0. Competitive programmes often want 7.5 or higher. Canadian Express Entry at CLB 9 needs roughly IELTS 8.0.
Yes. The scale runs from 1 to 9 in half-band steps, so 6.5 and 7.5 are both valid results. Listening and Reading reach an exact half band through the conversion table. Writing and Speaking are marked directly on four criteria, each in 0.5 steps, then averaged.
The Listening and Reading conversion tables here match the official ones published by IDP and the British Council, so those two results are exact. For Writing and Speaking, enter the band an examiner (or our AI Writing Checker) has already given you, since those two skills cannot be worked out from a raw score.
