How Your Overall IELTS Band Is Calculated
Your overall band score is the mean of your four skill scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — rounded to the nearest 0.5.
Rounding rules:
| Raw average | Overall band |
|---|---|
| 6.875 – 7.124 | 7.0 |
| 7.125 – 7.374 | 7.5 |
| 7.375 – 7.624 | 7.5 |
| 7.625 – 7.874 | 8.0 |
Note: averages ending in .125 round up (e.g. 6.125 → 6.5, not 6.0).

How to Improve Your IELTS Band Score
Listening
Practise with authentic accents (British, Australian, North American). Focus on note-taking under time pressure. You gain 1 band for every ~5–7 extra correct answers.
Reading
Develop skimming and scanning techniques. Time yourself — most candidates run out of time, not comprehension. Practise identifying paraphrase.
Writing
Task 2 carries more weight. Practise task response, coherence, lexical resource and grammar accuracy. Get examiner feedback on your essays.
Speaking
Record yourself and focus on fluency, vocabulary range, and pronunciation. Use linking phrases naturally. Hesitation costs more than minor grammar errors.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on your goal. For UK Skilled Worker visa, Band 4.0 per skill is sufficient. Most UK universities accept 6.0–6.5 for undergraduate entry and 6.5–7.0 for postgraduate. For competitive programmes (medicine, law) or top universities, 7.0–7.5 is typically expected. For Canadian Express Entry, CLB 9 requires approximately Band 8.0 in each skill.
Your overall band is the average of your four skill scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example: L7.5 + R7.0 + W6.5 + S7.0 = 28.0 ÷ 4 = 7.0 overall. Note that 7.125 rounds up to 7.5, not 7.0.
Yes. IELTS uses a 1–9 scale in 0.5 increments. Listening and Reading produce exact scores via official conversion tables (based on how many answers you get right). Writing and Speaking are awarded by trained examiners who can give any score from 1.0 to 9.0 in 0.5 steps.
IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. Most institutions and immigration authorities require a test taken within the last two years. If your score has expired, you must retake the test.
The band scale is the same (1–9) for both tests, but the raw-score-to-band conversion tables differ — General Training Reading uses a different table to Academic Reading, reflecting that GT passages are less complex. The same overall band in GT is not directly equivalent to Academic for university admissions purposes.
There is no limit to how many times you can take IELTS. You can sit the test as often as you like. Most test centres offer IELTS multiple times per month. Many test takers improve by 0.5–1.0 band after targeted preparation between attempts.
Band 7 is more than enough for UK settlement routes. ILR requires only B1 (approximately Band 4.0 per skill). British Citizenship requires B2 (approximately Band 6.0 per skill). Band 7 comfortably exceeds both thresholds.
